Offering Neurodivergent-Affirming EMDR Therapy:
I specialize in EMDR therapy and have a deep commitment to neurodivergent affirming care. I understand that every individual's path to healing is unique, and I celebrate the diversity of human experiences, including neurodivergent perspectives. On this page, we will explore the transformative power of EMDR therapy and shed light on how my practice embraces and supports neurodivergent individuals throughout the therapeutic journey.
I have a particular interest in supporting people who are diagnosed later in life and understand the unique challenges that people face in getting diagnosed as adults. I am supportive of people who have self-diagnosed autism and do not have an official diagnosis. In my office, your perspective on this will not be challenged.
The Essence of Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy
Neurodivergent-affirming therapy creates a safe and inclusive space that respects and acknowledges the diverse cognitive styles and experiences of neurodivergent individuals. It recognizes that traditional therapeutic approaches may not effectively address the specific needs and strengths of neurodivergent individuals.
The concept of neurodivergence challenges the traditional medical model that pathologizes deviations from a perceived "neurotypical" norm. I recognize that diverse ways of thinking, perceiving, and experiencing the world are valid and valuable and that neurological differences, such as autism and ADHD are unique expressions of human neurology and feel strongly that these differences aren’t problems to be cured or treated, but individual neurotypes with unique strengths and challenges. Being neurodivergent means having a brain that operates outside of society's perceived "norms" and offers a distinct perspective on the world. In my office, these differences are welcome and respected.
The Power of EMDR Therapy
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a highly effective and evidence-based approach for healing trauma, anxiety, and other psychological distress. EMDR harnesses the brain's natural capacity for healing by accessing and reprocessing memories that are stuck or causing emotional distress. By integrating bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or other forms of rhythmic stimulation, EMDR facilitates the processing of traumatic experiences, resulting in emotional resolution and transformative growth.
The Neurodivergent-Affirming Approach in EMDR Therapy
In my practice, I understand the unique needs of neurodivergent individuals and ensure that EMDR therapy is tailored to provide a neurodivergent-affirming experience. Here's how I implement this approach:
Individualized Treatment Planning:
I recognize that every client has unique strengths, challenges, and goals. I work collaboratively with neurodivergent individuals to develop personalized treatment plans that integrate their cognitive styles, sensory preferences, and communication methods.
Flexible Session Structure:
I can adjust the pacing of sessions, incorporate breaks or sensory regulation activities that you find helpful, and allow for time to process and integrate the information presented during the therapy session.
Sensory Regulation and Comfort:
Sensory sensitivities are common among neurodivergent individuals. My office is designed to provide a soothing environment, allowing clients to feel safe and comfortable throughout the sessions. I adapt my interventions to accommodate specific sensory needs, ensuring a conducive space for healing. This includes allowing clients to decide if they want the window shade up or down, where they want to sit, what lights they want on, what they want to bring into the room, etc. Many of my clients take their shoes off, bring their blanket and pillow and other things in with them, they can feel free to ask for things to be adjusted if it helps them feel comfortable.
I can also do EMDR online with a platform that allows people to do EMDR from the comfort of their home. The online platform has options to watch a ball (or other object) moving back and forth across the screen and has options that include bilateral sounds/music that you can listen to through earbuds or headphones, ability to change the background (you can upload your favorite scene!). Some clients do not want to look at the screen and that is just fine! We can use the music only or use music and bilateral stimulation that you do on your own - like tapping your thighs with your hands or other physical movement.
Communication Styles:
I understand the importance of adapting communication styles to effectively engage with neurodivergent individuals. I try employ clear and concise language and alternative communication methods when necessary, fostering a strong therapeutic alliance and enhancing the therapeutic process.
Flexibility and Structure:
Neurodivergent individuals often thrive with a balance of structure and flexibility. I strive to strike a delicate balance between providing a structured therapeutic framework while remaining open to adapting interventions based on the individual's unique needs and preferences. EMDR therapy protocols can be adjusted as needed to support client’s unique needs.
Strength-Based Approaches:
Neurodivergent individuals possess unique strengths and abilities that often go unrecognized. I view people from a strength-based approach, focusing on their resilience, creativity, and exceptional talents. By embracing their strengths, I empower clients to uncover their inherent potential for growth and self-discovery.
How can EMDR therapy help late-life diagnosed autistic individuals?
Many late-life diagnosed autistic individuals have experienced past trauma or emotional distress related to their autism or the challenges they faced before receiving a diagnosis. EMDR therapy can help process and resolve these traumatic memories or emotional difficulties, allowing individuals to heal and move forward in their lives.
Enhancing Emotional Regulation:
EMDR therapy can decrease emotional triggers and help to regulate emotions, manage anxiety, and navigate intense emotional experiences. By reprocessing distressing memories and associated emotions, individuals can gain greater control over their emotional responses and improve overall emotional well-being.
Addressing Sensory Overwhelm and Hypersensitivity:
Autistic individuals often experience sensory sensitivities and may feel overwhelmed by certain stimuli. EMDR therapy can sometimes help desensitize distressing sensory memories or associations, leading to a reduction in sensory overload and hypersensitivity. This can contribute to a more comfortable and regulated sensory experience in daily life.
Enhancing Relationships:
EMDR therapy can target specific memories or negative beliefs related to social experiences, promoting the development of adaptive thought patterns and decreased emotional disturbance. This can lead to improved communication and more comfortable connections within our relationships.
Building Self-Understanding and Acceptance:
EMDR therapy can support late-life diagnosed autistic individuals in developing a deeper understanding and acceptance of their autistic identity. By processing memories, beliefs, or societal messages that contribute to self-doubt or internalized stigma, individuals can foster self-compassion, build self-esteem, and embrace their unique neurodivergent qualities.
Coping with Life Transitions and Adjustments:
Late-life diagnosis often brings significant life transitions and adjustments. EMDR therapy can help individuals navigate these changes by addressing any associated emotional distress or resistance to change. It can provide a supportive space to process the emotions related to the diagnostic journey, adapt to new identities, and develop resilience in managing the challenges that come with late-life diagnosis.
